1961 Ski Doo Model J-61 - Production of the 1961 Ski Doo tripled from the initial 1960 model to 729 units. Two models were offered, the K-61 with a 7hp Kohler engine, and the J-61 with an 8hp JLO engine. The JLO engines had a lighting coil in their magnetos which allowed head and tail lights to be added to the machines. Significant changes were made to the Ski Doo for the 1961 model year: 1. The muffler is under the chassis in front of the track. 2. The accelerator knob became a lever. 3. Leaf springs replaced the coils on the wood skis. 4. The motor base was redesigned. Late in the 1961 model year, the wooden skis wee replaced by steel skis.
